DescriptionLike many of his fellow comic book creators, Jack Kirby served his country during World War II. In fact, when a colonel in France asked him if he was THE Jack Kirby, Jack said, “Yes. I created Captain America.” The colonel added, “And Boy Commandos.”As a reward for his ability to draw, that colonel made Jack a scout, a position Kirby said you gave to someone you wanted to die. The job involved entering towns ahead of the troops to determine if they were occupied and to draw maps of them. Kirby modeled Henry Jones, aka Mile-a-Minute Jones (pictured prominently in the splash), after Jesse Owens who won multiple gold medals at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Similar to other characters Jack created, Jones is a symbol of freedom, an outsider of heroic stature who fights against a fascist regime. Jack knew a few things about being an outsider, and he knew many things about soldiering and war. A Kirby DPS? I am still pinching myself. This piece from 1975 is quintessential Kirby: multiple figures, kinetic drama, fabulous composition, narrative clarity, and not a centimeter of wasted space. Plus, great Royer inks. Mercy! Jack's 1970s double page spreads are amazing, and this one is truly stunning. A great CinemaScope image from a great story by the King!

A Kirby DPS day is a red letter day!!! There should be fireworks and trumpet blasts! Oh wait, there are, right on the page!

Wow! A breathtaking DPS by Jack Kirby and Mike Royer! Could it be any more exciting or more dynamic? I don't think so. This is as good as it gets! Kudos for picking it up!
