DescriptionAn Exceptional Michael Golden Art Day!I have been wanting an Exceptional example of Michael Golden's artwork back in my collection and I have finely landed a favorite. The Big Three Golden comics for me and many others, are Avengers Annual #10, Doctor Strange #55 and Batman Special #1. I have been fortunate enough to have had one of each from the first two and then foolish enough to have parted ways with them. I have faith and hope to get them back one day. Now, I find myself having come upon what I think is one of the best pages from the third. Wait, you say! Best?!!!No Batman, well there is is foot and word balloons, no antagonist.?! What, may you ask or demand, is so exceptional about this page to make it one of the best?! This page highlights Mike Barr's and Michael's storytelling prowess starting out with a bang, leading the reader panel by panel effortlessly and ending perfectly with a beautifully placed continuation of the sentence from the previous panel. It is an amazing example of movement into stillness, an atypical yet effective action page! It is full-on Golden in terms of design, detail, realism and narrative. Michael is self-taught and brings his attention to perspective and form and function to bear fully in this self-contained sequence without the use of anything but the detectives, furnishings and Batman's foot! It has Michael's signature affinity for anatomy per hands, faces, manga eyes. Consider the details and dynamics of the door bursting open under the power of Batman's heel! Look at the inks in the last panel on Gorden's vest! I asked Mike DeCarlo, credited as the inker: his response: From Mike DeCarlo: I think so---I missed a few pages in this issue, but this looks like maybe one I did... I also asked Mike Golden's rep and have not heard back. This page looks like It could be Golden's inking, detailed and lush, particularly the last panel. This has also been true on other pages from this book. All in All,a page that has everything a Golden Fan can want and More. All the artwork and lettering is original and directly on the board with the zip-a-tone very cleanly added. A Big Shout out to Steve D. for working a deal! I could not be Happier!!! Addendum: Acoording to Gary Martin, the fourth panel was inked by Mike DeCarlo. Having had this framed and being able to savor it on a daily basis, I realize that this, even more than the Avengers Annual work and the Doctor Strange work, is by far, a Better and More Satisfying work in terms of pure craftsmanship and being Mostly Golden inks. I used to pine for my lost pages and now I smile knowing I have a Most Satisfying Michael Golden Batman Special piece!!!! Social/Sharing |

With all due respect to Mike DeCarlo, he must be high if he thinks he inked this page. I know he inked most of this issue, but this is one 100% Golden pencils/inks.

To set the record straight, I worked on this story (inking backgrounds) with Mike DeCarlo, and I saw the originals before DeCarlo or I inked on them. Golden inked all of this page, except for panel 4 (the 'WHOOM' explosion panel, which DeCarlo inked).
