Description

Jared Cullum is the cartoonist for the graphic novel Kodi about a bear and a little girl. The book was recommended by my friend Jared Michalski. After reading the story, I started following Jared and discovered his variant covers for Usagi Yojimbo, one of my favorite comics. He was also a plein air painter and art instructor. I saw Jared set up at Lightbox Expo in Pasadena, California. There were two tall stacks of painted works. One for Wonder City pages and the other for plein air works. I saw many pieces of landscapes of natural beauty and townscapes with interesting structures, but I was drawn to this marine subject. This is the tug boat Mathilda at the Hudson River Maritime Museum in Kingston, New York. After getting home, I scrolled through Jared’s Instagram and found this July 21, 2022 post from the site of the painting.

Such a unique spot with a boat parked on land. No wonder it would make for an interesting coversation piece.

Beautiful. Will you hang it? Makes me think maybe I should pick some up and frame/hang around the house
