Descriptionthis was an impulse buy of sorts. I certainly did not expect to purchase a hughes vampirella while browsing ebay one morning last dec but there it was. I have wanted an example of his work for some time now. Ive never come close to his commission list and still kick myself for not going all out when his gi joe 2 baroness cover was on ebay like maybe 12+ years ago. my budget for such does not allow multiple pics from these names so seeing this up for auction was very exciting. I wish I could have watched him work on it. just amazing up close. if I should ever get the chance, I hope to ask him about it. in certain light the grey fades away and color seems to take over. I know it was drawn for big wow 2015 and the pencils were used for an ink challenge. since the purchase, I have been told by a couple collectors that the proportions and pose of vampirella really turned them off to the piece. to each their own for sure. they did not appreciate the elongated legs and bat cloud but for me those things scream dread. her serpentine pose and colony really capture the character and only add to the evil seduction. the pic is a massive 14x22ish. so happy to have it here.frank cho's take from bleeding cool... "Here is my inks over Adam's beautiful pencil drawing. (I took some artistic liberties with her hips since I like my women with some meat on them. Forgive me, Adam.) Now, I'm not sure if it was planned by Adam Hughes or not, but the overall composition of this art looks like that of a woman's vagina, complete with pubic hair. If my observation is correct, my hat's off to Adam for a job well done. I got a good chuckle after I finished inking and realized the subtle design. You're a man after Georgia O'Keeffe's heart, Adam Hughes." frank's amazing inks can be seen over in Ingrid nelson's incredible collection. some folks have been kind enough over the years to share information in regards to this piece. Bill Romanelli shared this recently..."I was actually at Big Wow in 2015 as Adam was working on this one. He was doing it for a fundraiser and working on it throughout the convention, including during his own panel, with Allison Sohn giving the play-by-play as the audience watched & interacted with him while he worked. That little bat by her left calf that almost seems out of place? It was an accidental ink smudge at first & Adam spoke to us all about how you can use anything - even a mistake - to accent and add something to a piece. Thought you'd appreciate hearing that little bit of the backstory on this one." this is really fun stuff to hear. thanks bill. Social/Sharing |

The inking challenge was awesome for this; a lesson to show just how much an inker influences pencils. All of them were really great, then it was supercool to see AH! work his own magic on it. Thanks for sharing!

Has Vampirella ever looked sexier? I think not. Adam Hughes is a master of drawing beautiful women.

If there was an artist better suited to draw Vampirella, go ahead and name them. I'll wait. This is just pure perfection, the union of THE artist for THE character. Amazing.

Great seeing this in your gallery and I'm glad it has a good home. I won this at the Big Wow art auction and not long after sold it to an AH! fan in MS, somewhere around 2016. I knew I couldn't afford to keep it, I got a little too aggressive according to my bank account. Lol! I guess he needed to to pay a bill or two as well not long after. If you only knew what else he got from me. I actually get ill when I think about it! As Cher once said, if I could turn back time...
