My favorite team is the Legion of Super-Heroes. Young people with a positive approach to life and boundless hope and determination.

In the late 80s, the series was stopped for a time and restarted Five Years Later. This run was quite controversial since the universe had become a darker place and team had dissolved perhaps forever.

That said, I found the run to be quite remarkable and the first 10 issues or so to be among the best stories I've read.

The cover of the fourth issue really struck me. It features Mon-El, my favorite Legionnaire. His backstory is tough. He was fatally exposed to lead (his "kryptonite") and sent to the Phantom Zone for 1000 years. In the zone, he was ageless and safe from the poison. However, he was trapped for that time by the worst criminals in Krypton's history and his friend Superman was never able to find a way to cure his poisoning so that he could be released.

What I like about this cover is the determination to do the right thing that always drove him. I find it to be quite striking.

This recreation was done by Keith Giffen, the original penciller.

Clearly, I'm not the only one that likes this image. Jim Lee recreated it in a later run, see Additional Images.
