Description

I bought my first comic as an 8 year old from a vending machine at a Howard Johnson's in Brownsville, TX. You can read that story here and see a page from that comic.

A couple of months later, I spent six weeks in the hospital with a potentially deadly case of pneumonia. I was under an oxygen tent most of that time. At one point, my dad asked if there was anything he could get me and I said (as a veteran of exactly 1 comic) that I'd like some comic books.

The next day he came back with a stack of them. I don't remember many of them, but among them was Adventure 325 which was my introduction to my favorite team - the Legion of Super-Heroes. That stack really started my comic reading. From then on, I looked for Coke bottles at construction sites and took them in for the deposit - 3 bottles = 15 cents = one comic with some change.

Edmond Hamilton wrote that story and his work remains at the top of my list for Silver Age Superman stories. He also wrote my first SciFi book - City at World's End - not that I knew he was connected to comics at that time.

Anyway, the point is, I was hooked. The hook got set much deeper when a two years later, 13 year old James C. Shooter hit the stands with Adventure 346. I loved his work. Shooter/Swan/Klein remains my favorite LSH combo.

Until HeroesCon this year, I'd never met Jim. I hadn't really understood that he was there until I wandered by on Saturday. I had a nice chat and thumbed through his scrapbooks (take the time!) among the wonders was a photocopy of one of his "scripts." He didn't know how to write a comic book so he laid it out and added the dialog and captions as well. It's pretty impressive for a 13-14 year old.

Later that night, he was in the bar with some friends of mine and I joined the group and greatly enjoyed his stories (take the time to listen).

Somewhere along the line, he mentioned that he still drew and that he'd (somewhat reluctantly) accept commission requests. I didn't pull the trigger then, but I thought about it.

In September, GalaxyCon setup a show in Austin and Jim was a guest. We talked some more and I did commission him. I had no idea what to get, but he had an Adventure cover of the Legion of Super-Pets so I asked for them and Supergirl.

Not terribly long after that this piece arrived in the mail. I hope you enjoy it; it makes me unreasonably happy.

The cast:

There's enough Silver Age power in that assembly to alter the galaxy. :)

P.S.
Did you know that Jim used the pseudonym Paul Creddick when working as a comic book artist? Yep, it's true. Most of the work was for Acclaim/Valiant and you can see the list here.

Shooter may not be the best artist, but he sure brings that wealth of history and know how to show the characters off in the manner as they should be.

Wonderful art, wonderful stories!!! I whave not had the chance to meet but am amazed of his career especially all he did at  such a young age especially with the Legion of Super Heroes. I also grew up with Curt Swan, who did such legendry work on Legion, Superman and Supergirl. Cool!!!

I would NEVER have thought to ask him for a drawing, but that is REALLY FUN!  GREAT idea!
