HUNTER (1976)
19" x 24" watercolour & inks on board.

A true masterpiece of the macabre. Brooding, it is an exceptional example of the artist's work during the very height of his output. Depicting a vampire carrying the latest victim back to his lair through the snow, blood-spatters and footprints left behind, it is daringly composed and brilliantly executed.

This piece is also a favorite of Wrightson’s, who has been quoted as saying, "the picture has a weird, almost magical quality to it that makes it a success. I think it is one of the very best things I have done." He also says that it is, "[not] a picture that everyone expects from me". It is a very unique image for Wrightson, both in terms of scale and also because of its use of large areas of color.

I've loved this painting since I first saw it in The Studio back in the late 70s --- what a treasure! The way Wrightson designed the dark blood splattered over the footprints and the more prominent trees in the foreground are right in line with his other classic horror pieces, but I agree with his quote in that the painting is pretty unique in his body of work. The mood is perfect
