Description

Before this story, a brief, earlier encounter: it was 2010 and I had just come across the 1982 DC Style Guide. As a kid (and to this day), the artwork absolutely blew my mind, and I hoped its illustrator would one day grace the local convention scene. Several months later, I was wandering aimlessly around Artist Alley at NYCC and came across a pencil portfolio of García-López artwork. Lightly impressed, I muttered "ah, García-López, nice!" I then glanced up to see a modest, bespectacled man with a scruffy beard and slightly sunken eyes, who looked slightly confused and nodded. My eyes suddenly grew wide with realization... "...YOU'RE...García-López?" He nodded, simply. When I say I EXPLODED with excitement... this man was so caught off-guard by my enthusiasm that he presented me with 3 prints of his artwork, completely unprompted. Supercharged, I rushed over to the nearest dealer to attempted to find some, ANY sample of his comic work, as I failed to bring any with me. When I presented him with an issue of Batman:Venom to sign, he was befuddled: "You came back!?"

Flash forward to a year later: I had some semblance of an idea that, even though he wasn't on the guest list, García-López might show up unannounced. This time, I had some of my own artwork in tow and eagerly discussed it with him. At one point in the conversation, he smiled wryly and said "You know what? Name a character." Not one to hedge my bets, I said "uh...Robin?"

I still recall how he approached this sketch. At first, it looked like he was structuring a torso, but then he squared off the lower jaw. All in all, this probably took him three minutes, but it is etched in my memory forever. I regret the slight smudging but, as it happened while he was executing the piece, it remains part of the story.

I've met the man several time since, and paid him for some more Boy Wonder work; I hope to catch up with him soon, as I no longer draw like a nine-year old. His kindness was and is deeply appreciated.

You can only imagine my envy that you have had a chance to meet, and get such a gorgeous Robin, from one of the masters.

The sketch is absolutely lovely (Well, naturally), but I like even more the story of your meeting(s) with Mr Garcia-Lopez (Who I have yet to cross paths with, alas). I've geeked out a few times on meeting some of the pro's myself, and it's always nice to know it's not just me! :)

You can only imagine MY envy that you own THE quintessential Garcia-Lopez Robin piece! That being said, I don't think I'd trade my experience meeting him for anything, such a kind man.
