DescriptionFrom the landmark story arc that redefined the Batman franchise for the modern audience. Lynn Varley's innovative use of color in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns has been highly praised. Her extraordinary use of an extensive color palette was a revelation at the time and set a new bar for the comic book industry as a whole. This page from the seminal finale of Batman: The Dark Knight #2 features Lynn's blue line color work. 9.5 x 13 image. Acetate, gouache on blueline paper. When it was announced that Frank Miller, who had made a name for himself on Daredevil, would work on a Batman series in 1986, expectations were high, but Miller stepped up his game and delivered a work for the ages: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. This 1986 mini-series was a complete game-changer, introducing a completely original artistic vision and a form of hard-hitting storytelling that was new to the medium and inspired thousands of stories since. Certainly one of the most innovative parts of the work was Varley's coloring. This is the original art used to print the book. The original ink art was photographed onto a piece of acetate. Then the original ink art was photographed as a blue line onto board. Lynn then painted the blue line with gouache and other medium. The acetate of the ink art was placed over the blue and was sent to DC for publication. Social/Sharing |

Well, there’s something you don’t see every day... What an excellent, and historic piece of comic art. Well done, sir!

I've always wanted some of Lynn's color work. I'm quite envious!

Lynn's colors were so iconic, and this is a great example. Your tweet about this page a couple years ago actually motivated me to get one of my own! Thanks for sharing!
