Description

As this February 1941 American Legion magazine cartoon shows, Wally Wallgren could flat-out draw. If Wallgren had focused more on cartooning than procrastinating, he might be more of a household name today. This wonderful Sunday page-style cartoon shows a young WWII soldier being a chip off the 'ol block, going AWOL just like his pops did during WWI. The pen work is really terrific, creating a nice sense of atmosphere in the small space. And I love the way Wallgren uses the portrait of the father as a WWI doughboy to show his reactions to the son's doings. Wonderful stuff by Wally.

I always learn something from the art you post Rob! It's great to see amazing art from artists from this era that I'm not familiar with. Love this piece and thanks for sharing it.
