Description

This entry in the noir sketchbook didn't start off well. I thought Rick Leonardi's style would be a great add to the noir book. However, Rick's list was full for the day when I got my turn. He nonetheless kindly inquired what character I wanted and I responded a femme fatale, which puzzled him so I said the actress Lizabeth Scott. She was a major noir actress in the 1940s and 50s with a smoky voice but like, who's going to know that in 2023? Rick demurred, let's talk tomorrow about that day's sketch list, have a nice con. Palm to forehead time. I returned the next morning near the head of the line to ask for Painkiller Jane in a noir setting. Rick was the penciller on character's first incarnation in Event Comics in 1997. Bingo, good to go, second on the list, yay! At the end of the day I swung back to his table to pay and pick up the book and found, lo and behold, he was chatting with Painkiller Jane's co-creator, Jimmy Palmiotti. (Note: Joe Quesada is the other co-creator). What started off poorly ended nicely!

Great choice to have the classic crime noir trope of the horizontal blinds shadow on Painkiller Jane as they appear like bandages that are very much a part of her design.
