"The Tree in No-Man's Land" by Dave Wood.

I love Jack Abel's layout and inking on this piece. The panels visually tell the story of this patrol sneaking up on the German machine gun nest next to "the tree in no-man's land."

Jack also signed the piece to "Alan--Hubba, Hubba!" with the date 1/22/88. Perhaps it was gifted to Alan Kupperberg, who recounts that Jack, Wally Wood, and Syd Shores "frequently waxed nostalgic" and Wally saying "Al Williamson would say 'hubbahubba woowoo' when he saw a looker."* Is that where the "Hubba Hubba" part of the signature comes from? Did Jack gift this page to Alan Kupperberg?

During a Comic Art Live interview, Bob McLeod recalled that he met Jack when they both worked in Neal Adams's Continuity Studios in the 1970s. Jack was a very clean, careful inker and had a lot of control. For example, Bob watched him draw a perfect circle with a pen, finding his way around the circle free hand without a compass.**

On a personal note, Jack was a good singer and believed he could hang singing-wise with Tony Bennett, with whom he attended high school.**
