Description

"D-Day Part 4: Night Drop" by unknown writer.

The night before D-Day British paratroopers capture a battery to protect British and Canadian landings on the Normandy beach.

What the comic doesn't tell you is that the British had only enough explosives to damage, not destroy, the guns. British paratroopers then withdrew, allowing the Germans to return, fix some guns, and fire on invasion troops.

nice art by Evans! I especiially like the view of the artillery through the barbed wire in that top panel.

Most of the more popular War comics usually focused on artillary and gun fire, with both sides firing at each other. It was not too often that the storytelling made it a point to show some of the other, difficult things soldiers had to endure, such as crawling past barbed wired in the top panel here and getting strafed by gunfire the way it's depicted here, with a beautiful worm's eye view in the 2nd panel. It's great to see Evans depicting war on the ground, given he was best known for his aerial depictions of war.

Other war comics might have scenes like this, but they won't have as much of a photo journalistic style as Evans. The high action second panel could have been expanded into its own comic.
