DescriptionThis 23.25" x 33.5" original acrylic on board poster artwork was painted by illustrator Lee MacLeod for an unproduced 1999 Full Moon movie called Invader from Beneath.MacLeod created the posters for many Full Moon pictures, including the Puppet Master franchise. Charles Band, the B-movie empire's founder, would hire various comic book artists to sketch up potential film ideas before turning them over to MacLeod to refine the usually rough drawings into larger, more rendered, colored paintings. The illustration appears in the Full Moon Videozone featurette on the home video release of Talisman (1998), when Band announces Invader from Beneath as one of the "very lurid, freaky titles" planned for release in 1999 under his Pulp Fantasy label. A veiny, bulbous-headed beast with drooling fangs and razor-sharp nails emerges from the underground in a kaleidoscope of whirling colors, as a couple of scantily-clad prisoners crouch in terror. Genre fans would have been hard pressed to pass up the promises of such garish marketing back when local video rental stores still thrived. A graduate of The Art Center College of Design, MacLeod also contributed to major motion picture campaigns, designing the final promotional posters for Howard the Duck (1986), Batman (1989), and Pocahontas (1995). His work has graced video game covers (the Nintendo Entertainment System ports of the Ultima role-playing series), magazines (Nintendo Power), books (Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? literary adaptations), and trading cards (Marvel Spider-Man 1995 Fleer Ultra set). He has since turned to fine art painting en plein air and in his Santa Fe studio. Social/Sharing |
