Must admit that the absurdity of this image doesn't detract from the masterful rendition of the feminine beauty 😜

I agree wholeheartedly, Davide. But then again, this is really no more or less absurd than superheroes fighting supervillains wearing nothing more than body paint over the last 60+ years. At least these ladies aren't pretending to be clothed by airbrushing their entire bodies like the superheroines in particular seem to do. A masterful depiction of the female form, indeed!

But hilariously, despite their 'sprayed on' costumes, superheroes were famed for having no nipples or genital 'bumps.' Where can I get a ticket and a time machine to view this spectacle?

I don't know, Peter, but I'd also love to score some tickets to this spectacle. I imagine the show is a constant and complete sell out wherever they go, though. We may have to check with scalpers!

The thing is though there were female Gladiators, many of them freeborn Roman Citizens. They also wore the same gear as the men. That is bare-chested. Indeed a law was passed in 11AD banning Freeborn women from competing in the arena

I'm sure the original article this illustration accompanies is about that exact thing your link talks about. But written more for the layman who read the men's adventure magazines.

Thank you for the interesting article! Actually, what I find absurd is not so much the presence of female gladiators in Rome (or in general of female warriors in ancient times), but the fact that these ones look like Playboy Bunnies straight out of an issue from the '50s ; )

That is a reflection of the time so for me not surprising. The surprise was the attire being as accurate as it was. Apart from the artistic license of removing helmets. Alas I could not quite make out the text that goes with it,
