Description“Tribute to Otomo by Paul Pope”, 2021Sumi inks, Sakura technical pen, Copic marker on water color paper 20X30 inches Displayed at the Philippe Labune Gallery from April 8th to May 8th, 2021 during the “Good for Health, Bad for Education” showcasing 30 artists from 11 countries paying homage to Katsuhiro Otomo. Here we have Pope’s depiction of Kaneda, reclining comfortably on his motorcycle, with a moment of suspense created by the iconic pill flicked in mid-air. The void of the background allows the viewer to focus on the character Kaneda and the washes of color and line work by Pope. Traditional Japanese Sumi inks, black and orange, were used to create this palette and to honor the practices of traditional manga printing. Building upon the collection of works for the Good for Health, Bad for Education exhibit, and in collaboration with Felix Comic Art, the Philippe Labune Gallery helped coordinated a conversation between Paul Pope and Ian Bertram. They agreed to create works focusing on the arguably most important dueling relationship in the AKIRA manga series: Kaneda and Tetsuo. While Bertram took on the latter character, Pope took on the former. Social/Sharing |

Pope captures the cyberpunk mood and this piece is definitely deserving of its place in the exhibit!

Jaw dropping. That would be epic framed and hanging on the wall. Congrats, it's in a fantastic collection.
