DescriptionOne of the best tips I’ve ever learned from veteran collectors is this: try to obtain the best example of the work an artist is most recognized for by the wider world. But here’s the thing—what if your definition of their “best work” doesn’t line up with popular opinion? For me, personal nostalgia wins every time, because ultimately this hobby should bring you joy. (Even if it’s the type only you understand!) Take Travis Charest. Most collectors know him for his incredibly detailed work on WildC.A.T.s and especially Wildcats/X-Men. But for me? The pieces that left the biggest impression were his three Batman covers (#488, #489, #490) and two Detective Comics covers (#652, #653). The Darkstars run also showcased some of this best work (IMHO), though I haven’t found the right example from that yet. Which brings me to this beauty: one of the pieces Travis saved for himself… framed on his wall, right alongside the iconic Batman #490 cover. He eventually passed it on to our mutual friend Lance Suarez, who treasured it for years before giving me the honor of taking over stewardship. I’m beyond grateful for this friendship—proof that relationships are everything in the world of original comic art collecting. Check out the full reveal in Episode 3 of Collector’s Christmas HERE! Great looking piece! How long do you think Batman kept his eyes up?

Well, he may have succeeded in averting his eyes, but we all know that the perfectly placed cape is hiding his erect bat wang! Congrats, Carl, another awesome acquisition!

His eyes are covered and I am pretty sure they are already looking down. Great comment!

Great early Travis!Just distinct enough that DC didn't know what they had on their hands.

Cool to see this old school Charest. It's a fun way to gauge the phenomenal growth from this period. Almost doesn't even seem like the same guy. But I admit to having a soft spot for this stuff as well.
