DescriptionAcquiring a piece from each of the original Image Comics founders of their own creation has always been on my list. I remember when I made this decision, I told myself I wanted to get the best possible sample from each of them. One and done.During NYCC 2023, Erik Larsen was at a booth in Artist Alley, and it was the first time I’d ever seen him. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to get that ONE piece from him! He had plenty of Savage Dragon art available, but they were the oversized 18x24 pieces—huge! Eranga D was with me and we were both on the fence about having to carry such large pieces home. Also, they were from his later issues, which I wasn’t as familiar with since I had moved on from comics by then. I ended up not taking anything home because I didn’t want to get a page I didn’t love or was not nostalgic to me. Shortly after, I realized I didn’t see many of his Dragon pages hitting the market, so I did wonder if I made the right decision. Then, a week later, this cover showed up on the auction block. As soon as I laid eyes on it, I recognized it—it was an add-on for Wizard Magazine #69! It’s the perfect one-and-done Dragon piece for me, so I put in what I thought was a fair bid. I was willing to go higher, but the auction ended right where I thought it would, so I can’t say I wasn’t happy about it. So here’s my second piece from an Image founder. Two down, five more to go! Sweet Larson Savage Dragon cover dude! I really liked those 1/2 prequel style issues Wizard did with the various publishers. I like that goal of getting 1 prime example from each of the Image founders, best of luck completing the OA quest with the other guys!

I was there with you as we discussed how to potentially transport those monsters home. We both may have backed out but in your case, you made the perfect decision because this bad boy fell in your lap. Congrats, man!

Goal achieved with spectacularly powerful results! Larsen's audciously bombastic art carries the same spirit of those he admired most when he grew up in the 70's now put on a prescription of 90's Image.

Larsen's Dragon has been a constant quality read since its begining and this is indeed a great example.
