DescriptionIt is truly amazing how the art cosmos work sometimes. My last post of 2021 is followed now by the maker himself - another talent lost too soon. In fact, most of my exposure comes retroactively, being a fan of the son. What a team they would have made... The blacks have been absolutely ATTACKED onto the page, slashed in with confidence and a heavy hand that really fits the story. A previous poster noted "The page was done on hand cut comic art paper (Schoeller Durex) with ink, crowquill, brush, white out, zip-a-tone, and scratching implement." Social/Sharing |

Stunning! Like you, I didnt make the connection between Jorge and Gerardo till recently but the DNA is there plain as day. What an unbelievably gorgeous series of panels. Attacked is defintely the right word - there's a fearlessness in the brush strokes and I bet this page has some physical heft to it. Such a huge loss to the artform to lose this level of genius at such a young age (43!) but we're fortunate that Jorge passed on the love and talent to his kid. Wonderful pickup, Mikail!

Outstanding scratchy inks up top, and the lighting effect is outstanding. You definitely see those influences from the dad on the son's work. Great back to back posts, M. Congrats!

I'm sailing away
Set an open course for the Winter Sea
'Cause this got to be seen
Seen with Zaffino art that speaks to me
On board read the caption
You'll find reward
We'll grieve over sorrow
The emotion soars and I'll try, Oh Lord I'll try
To carry on
In your galley I see
Collection of a legend praised with sea shanties
Some happy none bad
I think of art transcends and the themes to add
We live happily forever
So will Zaffino
'Cause somehow you dismissed doubt
Got that pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can
To carry on

Wow...I think he used that scratching implement to actually dig the bottom half of that guys face directly into the paper in the first panel. Holy crap, now that is technique! You can see it, too, in the panels where he scratched whatever artistic effect he was trying to accomplish into what I can only imagine is crazy thick paper. That is awesome. Yeah, much too soon. Great score. Congrats!

Super page! Thanks for the big scan --- I hadn't appreciated the severity of his scratch technique before. Love how he uses it for reflected light and atmospherics/creating distance here.

Brilliant! You really need to check out Zaffino's Winter World to truly see where his son got his chops from!

What I love about this page is how the white is etched from the ink. It's such a tried and true technique but produces a uniquely COLD effect.

I absolutely agree 100%, Chris - the first thing I felt when I saw this incredible piece was a blast of cold. Epic add, M L, and "attacked" is a (if not THE) key word in your description: there is a vicious and visceral attack in the execution of these images, and it is so startling, it jumpstarts the engagement of the reader. Sometimes a piece pulls you in because of lighting choices, or panel layout, or character design... something "non-standard" that distinguishes itself from a "typical" page. And while this piece has all of those things (without question), it's the attack and raw power of the technique used here that gives this page its imperative or momentum to imbed itself into your cerebellum. Beautiful, beautiful piece, M L! Congrats!

Beautiful page congrats. That top panel is really dramatic. Not a lot of comic artists can pull that off in ink alone
