DescriptionThis is a very special piece to me. I've had it up on my wall for the last 7 years or so. I bought this sketch from Bernie at Heroes Con right around 2013. I knew he was going to be at the convention, and I'm a giant fan of his work. Meeting Bernie was not a disappointment. It was a big treat. I had just finished grad school and was working my first real job as an analyst.I have my masters in applied economics. John from Parts Unknown in Greensboro, my local comic shop owner when I was in school, originally turned me onto Bernie and his work. It was love at first sight between me and Bernie's work. At the time I was crunching through the original run of Creepy/Eerie, and any reprinted EC stuff i could find... which was hugely up John's alley. He suggested a number of issues from the 70s with featuring Wrightson and Corben. The first story I read was The Pepper Lake Monster. And I just tried finding any readable issues of his work from there. Fast forward to 2013: I went to HeroesCon that year with one goal. Meet Bernie Wrightson, and get a piece of his art. I loved this piece as soon as I saw it in his portfolio. I kept looking through what he had, and thinking about what I could spend, and talking to Bernie and Steve Niles. I kept going back to this one. I took a walk around the floor, maybe 10 minutes, and went right back. This piece is a grail piece in my collection. Using the Andy Robbins method it's a top 1%, and always will be. I bought it from my Favorite artist who ever lived, and enjoyed every bit of the interaction.. and all the other ones after. Thanks Bernie, you are missed by your fans and admirers. The sketch itself is nice and big, it's 11 x 14 and it's stunning to look at. I hope you all enjoy looking at it. Make sure to look deep into the lines. He hid a lot in the shadows of the textures. You can get lost in it. Social/Sharing |

Perfect story and great art to go with it!
Thanks Benno! I love this sketch.. if I was going to bring one piece of art into the grave with me... I think it's this one. I've got a lot of sentimental attachment to it... but then the collector in me would be irked that it was being ruined, and that nobody would ever enjoy it ever again.

Bernie was one-of-a-kind as an artist, and equally nice as a person. He is truly missed.

Man this reminds me so much of “the THING” prequel prelim material he brought to a few of the shows around the same time. Outstanding piece! You knew how fortunate you were to stand beside such legendary soul yet Bernie never came across as such. I can’t remember him ever once without his kind, gentle smile when I was around his table. His last year appearance at Heroes I took the time to tell him how much of an impact he had made on me. I let him know that he would always be in the upper echelon with his idol, Frazetta and how much of an America icon he would always be. The world is a better place because of Wrightson.

Bernie always came across like, a guy. A guy who was into comics and art. I really enjoyed getting to chat with him the 3-4 times that i was fortunate enough to meet him.
