DescriptionGuys, this is something really special. When I decided to jump into collecting comic book art, this was one of the pages that was top of my list to try to own. It's goddamned magnificent! and I feel very, very privileged to own this piece of comic art history.Warren Magazines; specifically Creepy, Eerie, and Blazing Combat were my gateway drug back into comic books in the early-ish 2000s. It was 2007, and I had just started grad school at UNCG. My best friend in grad school, who I also was friends with from undergrad, had a neat little comic shop right down the street from his apartment that we'd pass by walking from campus to his place on nearly a daily basis. We had both been comic book kids growing up. One day I suggested we go into the shop and check it out. I figured anything they had in there at the time HAD to be better than the tripe that was the 90s, which is what pushed me away from this medium that I so dearly love. The first thing that I saw on the wall was a few of the brand spanking new volumes of Creepy Hard Covers that Dark Horse had just started publishing. Back in the 90s I was a fan of Vampirella, and I read anything Creepy that I could get my hands on... which unfortunately wasn't a lot. I had always wanted to read more of it, but never had an outlet. Such was my love for what I had read, that these volumes immediately caught my eye.. even a decade+ later. I immediately grabbed the first volume of the rack and presented it to the owner of the shop. He eyed me suspiciously, and said "young man, are you old enough to read this?" He had a shit eating grin on his face. I proclaimed my love of the material, and he and I expounded on horror comics for over an hour. Thus began my real education into comic books and original art, at the hands of John Hitchcock. *I really apologize for the flowery language... I'm re-reading Princess of Mars this week, and Burroughs just puts me in that mood! LOL John and I talked about Ditko, and Frazetta, and Williamson, and Toth, and Archie Goodwin, and Morrow, and Torres and the awesomeness of the single Davis cover and a bunch else. And I think he was real happy that I knew Williamson / Goodwin's work together for the Star Wars strips... another piece of really good comic reading that was few and far between in the 90s, when darkhorse republished them in comic book form. Steve's work for Warren is amongst my very favorite works of comics of all time. And, I believe that his work for Warren Publishing is some of the best work that he's ever ever done. And this particular story is one of my favorites. It's the story of a man who goes on a little bit of a bender, and lands in the clutches of an evil scientist. The scientist is willing to go to ANY means to cure his son's Lycanthropy... Including a 100% blood swap with an unsuspecting / innocent victim, thereby transfering the disease and curing his son. Really great shit! I really just love Ditko's use of ink wash to create shadow and tone in this story. His skill and craft is truly on display in these panels. It's freaking magnificent. Pictures don't do it justice. I'm extremely excited to have added this page into my collection. I hope you guys like checking it out too. Finally but very much not least, I'd like to thank Ron for helping me strategize on getting this beauty, and for taking an a real interest. Super appreciated man! Social/Sharing |

I love your story, and that this has found its way to you. You deserve it, man, because you clearly appreciate it and appreciate how good comics used to be, back in the "good old days." Congrats on your awesome score here! I'm sure this is staggering in person.

I too think Ditko's Warren art is some of his best work and this page is a really nice example of his ability to tell a story as well has his wash technique. Also, it should be noted that the last panel is "killer."

SUPER cool! Beautiful page and wonderful story - your passion for the art seeps through in every word of your description, and I ended your narrative with a huge grin on my face. :) Serious congrats. Nothing is as cool as a comic collector landing a page they love as much as you love this one. Excellent choice, too!

Comment much appreciated sir! It was a long hunt to find / grab this one that required patience, and not grabbing other super cool stuff that I very much wanted. Def feels good to have it home :D

Thanks man... yeah the original runs of Warren are just my jam! And to me they were such important publications...the first to bite their thumb at the Comics Code and censorship.

I love Ditko's work at Marvel, DC and Charlton, but his Warren work is a whole other level of awesome. Amazing stuff.

Wow! What a cool page and what a cool story to go with it. I'm not very familiar with Ditko's early work for Warren but now I know I'm gonna have to go back and revisit it. That said, this is a fantastic page and really shows off Diko's horror credentials. Congratulations on landing this very creepy page.
