DescriptionA double dose of sweet and savory, chewy, crunchy original art goodness for Halloween! Treat or treat!Doctor Voodoo takes top billing for Halloween this year in a thrilling Immonen / von Grawbadger spread. Brother Voodoo is one of my favorite character designs ever, and when Jericho Drumm was given his (all too brief) turn as Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, the addition of the Cloak of Levitation and Eye of Agamotto to his already striking wardrobe put him over the top in my eyes. Stuart and Wade seemed to agree. He arrives on the scene here in the nick of time and in spectacular fashion. Just as spectacular is the page layout, with the top and bottom tiers of panels acting as visual “tributaries”, channeling the viewer’s gaze towards the hero shot of Dr. V in the lower right corner not once, but -twice-, as required by the flow of the story. Voodoo shows up and our eye follows the awesome mystical flea-bug-thing to the right and onto the hero shot. In panel 7, Doctor Voodoo challenges the villain, and our eye drops to the bottom tier, the delicious panel 8 (featuring the heavily shadowed profile shots of our heroes like a gatefold LP image of the New Avengers as Rawk Band), where we follow all the heroes’ stunned gazes over to the right and back up to… the hero shot, as a sort of full-stop punctuation and resolution to the spread. Stuart Immonen is a master of visual storytelling, and he employs some wicked cool tricks here to treat us all. Brilliant inking by Wade von Grawbadger, and nothing short of magical colors by Laura Martin on the published page. Thanks, Francesco! Happy Halloween, everyone! Social/Sharing |

Doctor Voodoo????? Wow, I had no idea. Like you, I always thought Brother Voodoo was a very interesting character visually. In fact, whenever I had to come up with a list of characters for a commission, he was almost always on it. LOVE the Doctor Voodoo look. That shot of him on the far right is awesome! This makes me think of that DC/Marvel Amalgam experiment some years back, except that this is an in-house amalgamation. And a very cool one to boot.

Wow, these two talented artists really pack a TON of visual storytelling onto this double page spread, don't they! From that super dynamic top horizontal panel to the final pose of Doctor Voodoo, and all the images in between. I really like that bottom horizontal panel of all the amazed faces of the Avengers gazing in awe at this new Sorcerer Supreme standing before them. Congrats, and Happy Spooky All Hallows Eve!

Immonen does Jericho Drumm proud! Brother/Doctor Voodoo is one of those characters with promise who never seems to find the right artist and writer to capitalize on that promise. It's a shame that Immonen never had a long stretch with the character because this is a killer character redesign that builds on the original look of the character.

Once I said I want Voodoo
With Von Grawbadger line
Immonen wonders if it's true
That Voodoo makes me cry
I only know this art is gold
You said "I love Voodoo”
Bendis got resolution left
We've got the art again
How do Voodoo, mm-hmm
I thought, Stuart, na-na, na-na
Taught me Voodoo
And then we can na-na, na-na
Just like Doctor
And double page na-na, na-na
Please give me more
Wade you will ink na-na, na-na
Hey, that's art I'm livin' for

Look, there's no question that Immonen has been one of the best artists of the last 30 years and there's plenty on tap here to exemplify that. But what's drawing me into this more than anything else, is the final panel. There's just something so saw and viceral about the way all the heroes are looking up, frozen with anticipation about what's going to happen next! Congrats on the acquisition, Jason!

Another absolutely incredible Immonen add! That top adjoining element is everything you want. Great DPS to hype and highlight the character.

Immonen's absolutely one of the best storytellers we got and this is prime example, man. you go from the top splash to the full figure and the layout to every bit of in-panel goings-on as well as those expressions...he's a maestro. Love how that final shadowed head shot panel is followed by the new Sorcerer Supreme is all his glory! And I'm be remiss to not mention Wade's awesome ink assist! Go Jericho! Definitely a fellow fan of the character here. Congrats, Jason!

Whoaaaa! What a kickass DPS from the New Avengers! Gorgeous art by Stuart Immonen and Wade Von Grawbadger. Love the arrival of Doctor Voodoo here and the passing of the Eye of Agamotto from Stephen Strange to Voodoo. The design of the spread is jaw-droppingly beautiful. And Wade's inks are sublime! Wall-worthy pick-up, congrats!
