DescriptionA great assemblage of heroes (all illustrated with the usual Immonen aplomb), but with a distinct difference in tone and focus from your standard Avengers cover: placing Edwin Jarvis smack dab in the center of things as the beating heart of the Avengers, aorta-like cables and all… including a small wire leading into his teacup! All the characters look great and are expertly arranged in a cool tableau… but let’s talk about the element of the piece that may be the most indicative of the level of artistic talent at work (or play) here: the cat! (Thanks, Eric! :) ) The cat’s inclusion (and placement) is a great add to the foundational composition, unbalancing things just enough to keep it all interesting - inserting just the right amount of distinct character and visual “flair” (in just the right spot) to be additive and not distract from the intent or focus of the piece. It keeps things from being a little -too- rote and symmetrical, and rather than dangle a piece of visual string (like, say, a tiny explosion or spark or piece of rubble in place of the cat), I love the fact that Stuart engages the viewer’s sense of storytelling to draw them in (”Do the Avengers have a cat now? Is it Captain Marvel’s Flerken? Is it a ghost cat? What’s up with the cat?!?”). And it’s always a pleasure to see examples of Stuart inking himself, too. While by no means “rough”, some of the hatching and details are not quite as smooth as what we’re used to seeing in a collaboration with his “traditional” inking partner, Wade von Grawbadger, but it’s beautiful work with its own charm and distinct flavor (which is obviously what's piping into Jarvis's cup...). Thank you once more, Felix! (Was able to score a couple prelims / cover pitches to this piece! Please see additional images... Thanks again, Felix!) Social/Sharing |

I never thought that I'd ever see Jarvis in a tentacle porn setting (as obviously conjured by Scarlet Witch here)? But it is indeed a lovely montage of a cover and has a lot of crossmedia appeal ;p

As you said, the addition of Jarvis really sets this apart and makes one more curious about the interior story than the usual jumble of figures might. Like you, I also prefer when Immonen has an inker like von Grawbadger but Immonen is still Immonen regardless.

Another Immonen banger! I love the selection of Heroes - as always, faultlessly illustrated. Congrats Jason!

This is terrific. And it's so wonderfully designed. Love having Jarvis front and center. And I totally get what you mean about the "roughness". It's like when I see a Jim Lee piece without Williams inks. Not really "rough", but just having more of an edge to it. And the cat is a nice "distraction" because I just can't keep from looking at it. Excellent cover my friend.

Remember seeing the cover when it came out and the original is just wonderful! Always enjoy an original Immonen. Thanks for sharing and congrats!

Jarvis is the heart and soul of the Avengers having the longest continued tenure of any character. He serves the team in a way non of the other heroes could. This a reward for long time readers who recognize this and you still get a great Avengers lineup poster composition. An Immonen pencilled and inked cover is special indeed!

beautiful work by Immonen, love that he inked it too. Having Jarvis front and center on an Avengers movie poster style cover design is so cool too. I know how much you love Immonen's work and this is an awesome addition to your collection of his work. congrats Jason!

You're right, Jason, his line isn't quite "rough" as much as it's simply just a bit less refined than Von Grawbadger's, or any other one of his inkers, for that matter. On the other hand, I always appreciate seeing an artist's actual vision come to life the way they, and only they, see it in their heads. It's quite lovely!
I can just see the dialogue coming from Jarvis that SHOULD be on the cover. "Oh dear, but we do have a bit of a quandry here, don't we? For some inexplicable reason, my Avengers have been infiltrated by Jaime Reyes, DC's Blue Beetle. Jaime, come down here and join me for a spot of tea, will you?"

I like the callout betwixt self-inked and Wade. Great image with the soul of the team on display.

Fascinating cover to Averngers #11, with the Avengers' butler, Jarvis, sitting having cup of tea amidst a pile of cords while watching his Avengers on some kind of holographic display. Clearly Jarvis is more comfortable at the Avengers mansion than he would be battling whatever evil villain or bug eyed monster his employers are fighting this month. Stunning art by Stuart Immonen. Great pick-up, congrats!
