DescriptionGorgeous cover art by illustrator extraordinaire Frank Xavier Leyendecker, from Collier’s magazine (July 14, 1906). Frank Leyendecker was, of course, the younger brother of the more famous J.C. Leyendecker. Frank trained with his older brother, was every bit as good an artist, and at times during his career was more famous. His art is fabulous, and represents the best of art nouveau. Sadly, Frank died at age 48 of a heroine overdose in 1924 — to this day it is unknown if it was accidental or intentional. Some believe that Frank was depressed over the ever increasing fame of his older brother, and that he and JC may have been fighting over a man (they were both notoriously gay). In his last days, Frank was living in the garage of his good buddy, Norman Rockwell (who was close friends and highly influenced by both brothers). Regardless, Frank was an inspirational artist, whose art stands on its own. I am ecstatic to add this fantastic example to the collection. Oil on canvas (28 1/2” x 22 1/2”). Professionally cleaned and restored by Joy Hallman in 2023.Social/Sharing |

Really nice to show the restless youth of the times with those hands and her posture counter to the chair's confinement.

Gorgeous - one of the few FXL pieces I've seen which rival his brother's legendary work (I mean, that's a HIGH bar).

This piece does not inspire ennui in yours truly. It's sensational, big congrats Ben! I'll have to check it out in person someday soon.

A beautiful example of classic illustration. Can not imagine how awesone it must feel to own a piece like this from either of the brothers. As said earlier, it must be even more impressive to view this art in person.
Congraulations on a piece of history. So glad she is in good hands for future generations to enjoy. Thanks for sharing this with us all here on CAF!

Wow! Wow! Wow! What a gorgeous cover painting by Frank Leyendecker! I love the pose of the woman here. She appears to be hiding behind the wing of the chair, peeking out at us with one eye. Her pose is aggresively casual and you can appreciate Leyendecker's skill in the way he skillfully rendered the folds of her dress and the flower pattern of the chair. Beautiful painting IMHO! Congrats!
