Description

This is an original strip dated 15 August 1950 (News Syndicate, 1950) by George Wunder. Wunder began his career in 1936 working at the Associated Press as a staff artist where he worked alongside, and learned from. artists Noel Sickles and Tom Paprocki. In 1946, Wunder had the unenviable task of taking over the very popular Terry and the Pirates comic strip when creator Milton Caniff left to begin Steve Canyon. Wunder continued to draw Terry for 27 years, allowing him to age and grow (he ultimately reached the rank of Colonel) until it was discontinuation on February 25, 1973.

As you can see, this is a really striking and dramatic daily, titled, "Changing Horses." I do not know all the details of the story but can see that Terry and another man named MacPiper had begun to tussle over the affections of an attractive Texas oil-woman named Rebel. Rebel stepped in to stop the argument and, as always, Terry gets the girl as Rebel asks Terry to walk her home leaving MacPiper in the lurch.

The original is done with brush and ink with an image area of 6.5 x 21.5" on a 7.5 x 23" piece of heavy Bristol art board. As you can see from the scans, Wunder drew some highly detailed panels, and the art, itself is quite large. That is why I think that the better strips from the 1940's and 50's are truly works of art. The art is dated in the first panel and signed in the last and is in excellent condition although it is trimmed close to the lower margin. Hard to believe it is 64 years old.

Shipping is not included in the price, and as always, I prefer not to take PayPal. Checks, money orders or bank transfers are preferred.

I have been asked if I will ship to Europe... I will, but it is expensive and if you need to use PayPal for an international transaction I warn that PayPal requires items of this value to be sent express (to get a signature) and insured (which declares the value for VAT). Just so you are aware.
