DescriptionI didn't realize how RARE a black costume piece by McFarlane is! McFarlane only drew Spider-Man donning the black costume in 5 issues (4 1/2 really!); ASM #298, #299, #300 & Spider-Man #13 (only half the issue) & #14. Also of note is that McFarlane only penciled & inked ASM #300, Spider-Man #13 & #14. ASM #298 & #299 were inked by Bob McLeod. So getting a penciled & inked black costume Spider-Man by McFarlane is a true unicorn rarity!What I love about this piece is you get Spidey in all 3 panels, Spidey swinging in action, the classic broken hip pose as well as some spaghetti webbing. What more could you ask for?!? Signed in the gutter by the man in gold ink! Another Easter egg you get is in the dialog. Spider-Man say, "A free Wayne Gretzky rookie trading card to the first one of you to string five words together in a sentence." Any big McFarlane fan knows about the relationship between he & Gretzky. This was a big get and want for my growing Spider-Man collection. Yes, you rarely see McFarlane Spidey pages with him wearing the black costume. A rarity indeed, and you got yourself a top shelf quality example to boot. Well done, man!

This was close to the end of his run at the title and Marvel. It was one of the last chances he got to draw the black suit. You can see he went all out and knocked this McF'er outta the park.

Next to the first issues of Jim Lee's X-Men and Liefeld's X-Force, I think McFarlane bringing back the black costume was one of the most anticipated events of 1991 in my local comic store. Congrats on the great pickup!

and as for the connection between McFarlane and Gretzky.... McFarlane was born in Alberta , and Gretzky played for Edmonton (Alberta)oilers !
they both have roots deriving from Alberta , Canada !
