DescriptionThis is a pinup Grummett submitted to DC but it wound up being unused likely due to its striking similarity to the inside cover to Adventures of Superman 501. It was then inked by Doug when he found it yrs later. Super-extraordinary in hand...Social/Sharing |

It's possible this may have been the first version of the drawing. I can't think of a single reason why Grummett would draw an almost identical illustration after the fact, unless it was meant as a commission.

Man, to my untrained eye, your piece looks identical to the published version (except for the hand & thumb). I keep going back and forth between the two, trying to find where they differ. Reminds me of the Game Magazine puzzles where you have to find tiny differences between two virtually identical pictures. Anyway, great grab, man! I like how Grummett is getting a lot of love these days from guys like you and Ruben.

Very cool piece. Looks to be on official DC artboard, I wonder what this pinup was originally submitted for.

Wow!! What a piece! Totally shows what a great team Grummett and Hazlewood were/are!

It MIGHT have possibly been intended for WIZARD or some other comic book magazine. That's what I recall. It was not very fleshed out as far as the hair and jacket went. Done in a hurry in that whirlwind of a time. May have been mostly light-boxed. (Man, I am proud of that leather!) Things were such a whirlwind maybe someone said it was just too close to the original piece and I was told to ink something else instead. So it hung around for years in with some other stuff.
DEFINITELY inked/finished in 2012. Not a recreation I did on my own. I knew it would take some thinking and care to flesh it out more since I am not a great overall artist. I didn't just want to slap some ink on it since it was so close to what we had already done.

Thanks for clarifying that Doug. You guys did a fantastic job. I always enjoyed your work with Tom as it was my favorite era of Superman (and many many fans would agree).

Didn't know that. Just assumed the old owner had it commissioned as he sold me his whole collection and then got this along with other Reign cover recreations. I need to reconnect with everyone. Either way this is an awesome piece! Congrats!

Another fantastic piece! Grummett hits that sweet spot in my reading & collecting window. From Titans to Superman to Superboy and Robin. The man was on🔥fire! Lots of great memories.
