DescriptionI had seen recently that Barbara Gordon will be returning to her wheelchair in an upcoming graphic novel, "The Oracle Code" (https://www.themarysue.com/barbara-gordon-returns-as-oracle-in-the-oracle-code/). I suspect her return to this role in canon will occur ultimately, as well, although I cannot predict when. And it having been International Wheelchair Day (March 1st), it seemed a fitting time therefore, to share this page. It's interesting that this is not considered by some to be the first appearance of Barbara Gordon as Oracle. They would give that distinction to Suicide Squad #23. However, if one actually looks at SS #23, "Oracle" is represented merely as a word balloon emanating from a computer terminal -- there is *no appearance* of Barbara Gordon there. As her identity is not revealed until issue #38, while I can acknowledge the word balloon is the first appearance of "Oracle" as an identity, that identity is akin to the introduction of a costume; it's not quite the same without the person behind it. And without the knowledge of who it is in issue #23, or even an appearance of a person in silhouette or some such as the source, it could have as easily been assumed to be an A.I., and not a person at all, after all, Oracle's "first appearance (word balloon)" reads: "Hel-lo. I am O-RA-CLE. Is any-one pres-ent?" The broken verbiage makes it appear as though the voice itself was haltingly computer generated. As the assumption that it wasn't even a human could have been reasonably made at the time, and there was no depiction of any human entity behind it (let alone anything specific to Barbara), SS #23 cannot, therefore, have been the first appearance of Barbara Gordon as Oracle, but was merely the first deployment of the "Oracle" identity. An electronic costume, if you will. It is my contention that this page, SS #38, p. 11, is *the first appearance of Barbara Gordon as Oracle.* In fact, a similar argument is expounded here: https://www.cgccomics.com/boards/topic/355513-oracles-first-appearance/ Side-note: I purchased this piece from a friend on here. Am I happy with it? Hell yes. Social/Sharing |
