DescriptionOkay, so I never expected I would get this piece when I first saw it...I will idly inquire once in a great long while (over the last decade, probably only once every couple of years on average) about this or that piece, and practically any time I do so, it's such a wonderful piece, or so very much in demand that I know my question is rather moot to begin with, and so I don't get my hopes up. I know it will be spoken for, or too expensive, or some other obstacle will be in my way. This was one of those, so when I placed my inquiry with Colleen, I was not at all surprised when I didn't hear back. After all, I'm just some mook emailing her out of the blue; not even a member of her patreon (because I honestly just can't afford another subscription to anything right now). The internet had already justifiably ooh-ed and ahh-ed all over it in promotion for its upcoming publication, and doubtless, someone had already arranged for the cover, or maybe it was one she'd want to keep, and in any event, there'd be no point in contacting me after that decision was made. Now, I don't check my email often, so it was quite by chance that I looked in on it shortly after Ms. Doran *did indeed get back to me* after what seemed enough time to my mind to convince me I'd not hear back at all (although my hope to hear back, while being convinced I would not, may well have distorted this time to make it feel longer than it was). I'd pegged in my mind an idea of price, thinking, "This must be *at least* a (x amount) piece," which, while a very reasonable ask for the work, was right at the very top of what I could afford to spend on *any* piece at that juncture (rich, I ain't). She mentioned some other folks were making inquiries about it, and we agreed that this was some of her best work, and she was frank about what she was asking. Incidentally, it was "(x amount)," on the nose. I... could do that! It took some finagling, but we worked it all out, and Colleen was wonderful, thoughtful and patient, and I would recommend anyone to contact her directly about buying some of her lovely work. I consider myself staggeringly lucky to have snagged this piece. Colleen's work here is just magnificent in detail and aesthetic, evoking the classic works of Harry Clarke and Aubrey Beardsley. The cover features the "wicked" Queen from a familiar tale darkly reimagined by Neil Gaiman who recasts her as a tragic protagonist against Snow White who, in Neil's vision, is a vicious child vampiress. "Snow, Glass, Apples" began as a short story with Charles Vess illustrations back in 1994, released in a limited issue to benefit the CBLDF. It's been featured since in anthology, and adapted as an audio drama you can find on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xlt30OzXnLY&list=PL431956F88D6E7482 Now, in its 25th year, this new edition is being released August 20th with Colleen Doran's gorgeous work to adorn it. I'd strongly encourage you all to contact your LCS to get a copy before it sells out. Social/Sharing |

Absolutely stunning!!! I actually asked Colleen about the availability of the cover at Heroescon this year and she said that she had just recently sold it. Congratulations on picking this up!

Hi Morgan - I'm curating a show of Colleen's work in NY and would like to borrow this beautiful cover art from you. Did you get a message from me?
