DescriptionWell I’m not sure what to say here other than I’m one lucky collector . Few days ago I was surfing Charles Vess pieces to see if anything new was added and to my amazement I saw this posted by a long time collector. I knew right then and there I may be looking at one best renders I’d ever seen of Spiderman by Vess period! I sent PM asking if the piece was available for purchase and the rest is history. An unusual size because it’s 11 x 17” pencil signed & dated 1986. The inscription at the bottom was either done in 86 or later I couldn’t get confirmation on that . In my opinion this strikes me as a private commission rather than a con sketch piece just because it’s more finished and it’s size . Obviously I’m speculating but most convention pieces I’ve seen or read about are smaller . All of them including my other Vess from 85 seem to show a variation of him swinging and his trade mark moon in background. The actual piece has so much movement it’s stunning . I can feel the power Spiderman is using propelling himself from one web to the next . His body outstretched showing Charles Vess beautiful knowledge on anatomy . From his exposed pelvic bones to a flared rib cage to an even better contorted hand that releases his webbing . It’s simply beautiful . The lighting and line work on this as well takes the image to the next level . From his feet slightly hidden in the misty fog to the darker hues on his upper arms and torso . I don’t think it gets better for a Vess fan. Easily one the best Spiderman Vess drawings I’ve seen. So happy to have this! 11 x 17” Pencil Dated 1986 Social/Sharing |

Beautiful and moody--it was such fun discovering an unusual style like Vess' in various Marvel mags in the 80s; it was always a treat.

Congratulations on an exquisite illustration! I am a red and blue Spider-Man guy, but this piece is fantastic and the lush pencils work much better on this costume version!

Sincere congrats, Miles! I can vividly picture Vess's black costumed Spidey from the covers to Web 1, Web Annual 1, and others. You picked up a great example with that trademark texture AND a great pose!
