DescriptionAt the 2022 edition of the Baltimore Comic Con, I came across Alan Davis' table which was manned by my friend, Larry Tun.Larry came around the table to talk and asked if I was going to get a sketch. I really hadn't thought about it, I'd read the rules from Paul Greer on FB, and thought it would be too much trouble and that I would be too late. Larry pointed out that the line was not yet full. Knowing that I would regret not meeting Alan and getting a sketch, I jumped in the line. I hadn't brought my pad of paper, but I did have two sketchbooks. One was Sheldon Mayer's characters. The other? Artist's Choice. In that sketchbook, the artists can draw whatever they wish (well, up to PG-13 anyway), but they have to write on the back why they drew what they did. Alan was quite unprepared for this. He asked if he could just draw a circle to fulfill his commitment. I said sure, so long as he wrote why on the back of the page. I'd happily pay the $200 to have an interesting story to tell about the circle. :) So we chatted a bit more and I mentioned a few classes, e.g., the LSH. Eventually, he started drawing, but I couldn't figure out what he was drawing until he finished. He drew while I chatted with Larry and Paul. When done, he turned it around and it was an older Alan! I was thrilled though the Alan in the drawing is quite a bit older than the Alan at the table. It was clearly the same guy. Technically, he describes the piece and not why he chose to draw that image, but I'll accept that. :) I was and remain delighted. Kathy and I went to lunch later and Alan and a friend were about to sit down when I called them over and offered to buy lunch. We had a great chat and they ate like birds so I got the conversation for a negligible extra on the tab. :) Still later, we ended up at dinner with Alan and Co. and that was fun, too. That's an interesting sketch of how he sees himself in the future. Maybe it was to be how he felt he was going to look after the weekend was done! The fly is a nice bit of action as is the hand still holding the pen ready to do a follow up sketch the next time you see him.

That's great Alex! You got something very unique and a great experience out of it. I used to see Alan at SDCC, but haven't in decades. His work on the Legion was always great.

That's just cool! I met and got a sketch from Alan at C2E2 a couple years ago. A very nice chap.
