Description11" x 17" pencil and inkMore than a few times I've seen a number of people disparage Marc's art, one even going so far as to post a page here, rant about hating his art and giving D'Israeli credit for "saving it." If you've ever seen Marc's pencils or spoken to the artists on that run, that's absolutely not the case. Personally I think Marc was far ahead of his time and it's crazy to think what might have been if the industry was not so obsessive with photo realism in the 90s that still plagues the industry today. I love Dringenberg's goth/punk aesthetic established early on, Shawn McManus' whimsical style that so perfectly suited the fantasy needed for Game of You and the moodiness of Michael Zulli's pencils in The Wake. But I strongly feel Marc's style is wholly singular and capable of capturing a deep range of emotions, the sort which was really needed to pull off an arc like The Kindly Ones. It's not a particularly notable page but if you look through my gallery I have a lot of Marc's illustrations and a deep love of his work so getting one of his pages was a backseat hope for a while and incredibly meaningful. So I'm grateful to have elevated to a published piece from him. Social/Sharing |

I was watching this auction closely. I agree that Hempel gets a bad rap, he's one of my favorite if the Sandman artists. Congrats on such a great example.

I really like the way Hempel spits the page between Despair and Delirium with some faint tangents in lines to connect the two. One wallows at the bottom of the panel, the other spirals upward. It's good storytelling all around.

Part of the joy of Sandman is the variation of artists and interpretations of the artists (painters, pencillers, inkers, and colorists) that touch the book. It is afterall about dreams, which are different for everyone. I don't think that there is a "this is a better Sandman artist than so and so." I enjoy Hempel's style becuase it is so different, hard lined yet elegant. Congrats on a great page.
