Big Wow Comicfest, San Jose, April 2015

Claire Wendling came over from France for her first US convention thanks to Steve Morger of Big Wow. She worked at Warner Bros. animation for less than a year in 1997 and this was her first trip back to our country. (Bobby Chiu brought Claire to a Toronto Schoolism event in March.) My brother's Stuart Ng Books was set up next to Claire's table with the first copies of the new reprint Iguana Bay 2.0. (They were flown from Korea to LA and my friend John drove them to San Jose.) Claire and her husband graphic designer Christian Mattiucci offered original art and prints. There were so many wonderful pieces that I had a hard time choosing. On Sunday afternoon, I picked this color fox piece.

During set up at the con, Frank Cho came over to say hello to Claire. He described the first time he saw her work when he stopped by Stuart's booth at SDCC years ago and admired the big cats from Wendling's book Desk with Bill Stout. Fellow exhibitors Frank Cirocco and Lela Dowling were set up nearby and came over to meet Claire. Frank posted photos from the con and the barbecue to his Big Wow 2015 facebook album. My sister-in-law Amy Wagner posted photos of the con and Claire's talk at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco on her Behind the Scenes at Stuart Ng Books blog. Frank and Amy show character designer Terryl Whitlatch meeting Claire and demonstrating copic markers. Terryl's friend and John Fleskes both captured Claire at the con. Links will be forthcoming.
