DescriptionAn enormous (close to grail-level) add for me: an impossibly heroic, fantastically thrilling moment from one of my favorite story arcs ever: ‘Who Is The Black Panther?’Forgoing a traditional title page splash, it bursts out of the gate and hits the ground running immediately; an almost half-splash to quickly set the scene - his Queen in peril, a fallen lackey in his grasp - and then an incredibly dramatic shot of the Panther’s steely gaze, all willpower and dreadful intent: Indomitable. I love how the sparse usage of solid black on this page - almost nothing other than T’Challa himself - allows for the Panther to explode out of each panel he’s in. It's all handled with the hallmark of JR, Jr.'s style: the masterful economy of his storytelling. He achieves so much, so effectively, with such efficiency. His style isn’t a simple one by any means, but he has such a keen grasp of storytelling and conveying dramatic moments - what to include and what to leave out - that his art is an almost primal, visceral expression. It is truly sequential narrative storytelling of the highest order. And even in the face of the power and beauty of this piece, this page will forever be a testament to me of what truly lies at the heart of this crazy little hobby of ours: the people you meet and the richness and depth they add to your life, collecting experience, and even to the relationship you have with the art itself. I never imagined I’d have the great good fortune to add such a beautiful page from this run to my collection, and I have to thank, most sincerely, the mighty K Gearon for allowing me to showcase this treasure. Thank you, K! Wakanda Forever! Social/Sharing |

Panther so prominent throughout, in that signature JRJR style... I love the closeup zooming into his eyes. A reminder that there is a man beneath the regal mask! Huge gratz on this momumental pickup.

Fabulous opening page by the always amazing team of John Romita Jr and Klaus Janson. I love Romita's portrayal of BP, muscular and solid! And I love how Janson's inks really complement JRJR's style. Great combo, great pick-up!

When I get title page, my mother called me to her side
She said, "Son, you'll level up now
Pretty John Romita line"
And then she said
"Just because you've become a young fan now (man now)
There's still some things that you don't all his know how ('stand now)
Before you ask Gearon for his art now (hand now)
Keep your Janson for as long as you can now"
Wakanda told me, you Panther shop around (shop around, shop around)
Oh yeah, T’Challa shop around (shop around, shop around)

Awesome page--I loved JRJR's take on the Panther; that middle panel with his eyes is absolutely killer. Jealous!

Must be getting old. Actually forgot that BP had a cape back in the day. Anyway, nice page with the usual solid Janson inks.

Continuiing the JRJR extravaganza! Powerful page featuring Panther here. Its been a while since I read the Hudlin/JRJR but what's in the very bottom left corner. Looks like an overturned, old-school Bat-mobile! Cat-mobile?

JRJR's work on Black Panther was some of his best work this century. I'll admit to having my doubts when JRJR was announced as the artist for this title, particularly since Sal Velluto's take on the character was so vivid in my mind at that point, but JRJR knocked it out of the park. Congrats on getting this fantastic example from that run.

Glad you like it so much, man! Definitely was a fun series, and brought some new fans to the world of Wakanda. Though never easy to let go of good art, much easier knowing it's to a fellow fan. And I've got another ;) Nice full shot up top and love that middle panel - you KNOW Klaw's in some legit trouble! Congrats!
