As my years as a collector has gotten longer, I tend to look at newer artists less and older artists far more. I have always been a fan of science fiction comics and strips and just recently discovered UK strips. Modesty Blaise, Jeff Hawke, James Bond... and now Dan Dare. I had no idea how great this art is. Incredible detail, attention to likenesses (Hampson used many of his family and studios as models), and even made models of his space-ships for reference. His studio is an amazing story.

These stories appeared in Eagle weekly magazine as the first 2 pages of every issue for over a decade. This is the first page from Vol 2 # 17 (which also served as the cover) that appeared on the newsstands 3 August 1951 and shows Dan and the Threens preparing for battle. It continues what some have called the Voyage to Venus story that ran through most of the first years of the strip introducing the major characters, the different species on Venus and the Mekon that served as the major villain.

As you can see (and unlike American comics of the time) this art was done in ink and watercolor - full color. The boards were cut into sections and the logos were not on many originals, nor did Hampson sign many of the boards. It is well known that his was a studio effort, although the drawing was all his.
