DescriptionThe recently-published (by an Italian publisher) Artbook showcasing John's work, this limited edition 'White' version sported a blank cover which now features this beautiful piece by John. His only 'brief' from me was the suggestion that it be a portrait discernibly based on his wife, Liliana. Mission wonderfully Accomplished, I feel...Social/Sharing |

A beauty. Can you get these books (and the painted cover) here in the UK?

David,
Many thanks for your kind comment. To be honest, if I hadn't seen a copy of this newly-published book here on CAF (also featuring one of John's unique painted covers), I'd never even have known it existed! I emailed John''s wife Liliana (who's also very much his Business Manager and archivist) to enquire as to its availability and she in turn contacted the (Italian) publisher to try and obtain a copy or few. Long story short, she emailed me when she'd got hold of some of the blank-covered 'White' editions, asked me what I'd like John to paint on the cover (with a price range dependant upon whether it was to be a pencil sketch or the pricier, full-colour piece - I opted for the latter, needless to say) and some weeks later, it turned up, splendidly and securely packaged by Liliana, in all its glory.
if you're interested, I can only suggest that you perhaps drop Liliana an email via the 'Contact' section of John's Bolton Studio website - it may be that she has come copies of the book left, although I know it was a fairly limited print run. Hope this helps, Dave.

David,
So, looking back through the email exchange I had with Liliana in the run-up to my 'commission', it seems that the proposed options/prices for John to work his magic on the blank cover were £100.00 for a pencil sketch and, for a full-colour, mixed media piece...(are you sitting down!?)...£500.00!
Yes, I know it sounds a lot, but it's actually eminently reasonable, given the outlandish prices that many (to my mind far less polished) pieces fetch, even here on the CAF site.
I don't regret it for a second; the man's a veritable legend in this sphere.
Best,
Bruce

Hi Bruce Oh yes, John and Liliana are lovely folk, I had the pleasure of visiting his studio in the early 90s, as I purchased a page from John's Army of Darkness. A great page which I wish I still owned, but as we all know with this hobby, you end up trading for other peices over the years. I've made some regrets to be sure
