DescriptionBehold, a historical gem unearthed!Beheld within the archives is the sole Golden Age Franco-Belgian surviving cover featuring superheroes, gracing the pages of S.E.P.I. on July 25, 1941. Crafted by the skilled hand of French illustrator André Jourcin (1905-1974), this cover holds a place of distinction in the annals of comic book history. Amidst the turbulent backdrop of World War II and German occupation, the birth of iconic figures like the Green Lantern (DC) in 1940 by Martin Nodell during the Golden Age echoed across continents. Even amidst the shadows of conflict, the emergence of early superheroic characters graced the shores of Europe, particularly in France and Belgium, during the early 1940s. Their adventures found sanctuary within the pages of esteemed publications such as "La Collection Fantôme," offering young and old readers alike a respite from the harsh realities of wartime occupation. Titles like "L'Evadé de Krypton" (The Escaped from Krypton) transported readers into the fantastical realm of Superman's earliest adventures. Similarly, within the confines of "Le Supplément de Hurrah!" under the S.E.P.I. Editor's banner, readers were enraptured by tales evoking the spirit of the 1930s and 1940s. From the swashbuckling adventures of "Le Fantôme du Bengale" to the mystique of "Mandrake Le Magicien," each issue unveiled a tapestry of captivating narratives. Amidst these tales of daring exploits, titles like "Le Dieu De La Jungle" (The Jungle God) and "Le Diamant Noir" (The Black Diamond) enthralled audiences with their exotic allure. At the heart of this historical piece of art lies an impressive image, measuring 27 cm (11") by 34 cm (13,4"), encapsulating the essence of a bygone era and the enduring legacy of these pioneering superheroes. Savor the experience to the fullest! Social/Sharing |

really interesting part of comic history. My guiess is the anti-german stories never appeared! It is also interesting that policies that often steered comcis like DC's away from anti-German themes prior to WW2 (and often durign the war DC stories tneded to not be tied closely t othe war) made them more adaptable for publication in Nazi-dominated Europe-.
