DescriptionSooooo- this one is way outside of my collecting forte… but sometimes things click and happen for a reason. It was the opening moments of OAX2025 and I was at the front of the line for Gerhard with my buddy ML. Gerhard is not a X artist or too high on nostalgia with me.. but I’ve always liked his work: the intricacy of his lines.. the hatching the detail the tones etc.. always just a marvel to look at . And I knew he was retiring so maybe now was the time to grab an example. As per usual he had a lot of Cerebus sketches.. but I was looking for something unique. And I saw this! A reimaging of a very famous pre code horror comic cover.. Horrific 1 from 1952 which was based off a story in the vein of the “Dance Macabre “ concept. The contrast of beauty and beast always grabs my attention and in this case it really allowed Gerhard to flex his artistic muscles in so many ways. I asked what it was as I didn’t recognize the homage immediately and he just said it was a redo of an old horror comic.. eventually it clicked … and as an old Golden Age Comic collector it just fit …. Poking around the internet I found a blog entry on it from Gerhard back in 2018.. so the piece has been waiting for me for a long time! Wow, what an intense and impressively rendered cover. Far outside your realm of collecting, but well worth it.

1) Good job researching!
2) I think Peter Capaldi could play the maestro in Gerhard's re-imagining.

Gerhard goes hard on this one! He orchestrates a symphony of linework that build to a dramtic crescendo while the swan like ballerina continues on even in the face of terror!

Wow this is crazy! Gerhard's style clearly comes through and it's really wonderful to see him take on different subject matter. Makes for a unique and impressive piece!

Really cool man, exactly the kind of piece that would tempt me at a show if I was right in front of it. I'm the same way, think Gerhard's art is great but just not a Cerebus guy, this is great!
