DescriptionKirby Award for Best Black and White Series (1986)Love and Rockets is a masterpiece series published between 1982 and 1996, created by the Gilbert brothers, Jaime and Mario Hernandez. In their early twenties they were published by Fantagraphics and found in Love and Rockets an oasis from the American mainstream obsessed with the superhero genre. The series takes place in Palomar, a small town in Central America and has as its central character Luba, a strong woman of Indian-American ethnicity. Her large breasts and her disheveled hair make her the object of desire of all the inhabitants of Palomar. Luba raises her children out of wedlock and is a tireless worker. In her stories tinged with eroticism and melancholy, she always tries to maintain her independence, even if sometimes she toys with the idea of letting a new man into her life. Filled with local intrigue, tragic love stories and occasionally violence, the stories are presented with sinuous lines and a touch of South American magical realism. Social/Sharing |

These pieces are great as Gilbert brings us a foreign culture, characters, and their motivations that have more similarities to American small town life than readers expected.
