DescriptionJohn Constantine debuted in 1985 as a supporting character in Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing. By 1988, his popularity had reached such a level that he was given his own Hellblazer comic book. Thus the Machiavellian mystery man became a fallible and flawed opportunist. Conceived as a working-class English sorcerer capable of warding off the threat of a demon through trickery rather than magic, Constantine is a mystical detective with no morals and perpetually at odds with the forces of good and evil. Despite his immorality, however, it is easy to feel sympathy for this anti-hero, an arrogant everyman that readers both love and loathe at the same time. Hellblazer is often imbued with commentary on British society and politics, always with a supernatural undertone. The artists’ sinister realism adds to the dark and raw atmosphere of the stories. Despite this, we can't help but root for this character with his raincoat, his biting wit and the cigarette eternally in his mouth.Social/Sharing |
