DescriptionI think we all have stories of commissions gone bad. Thankfully, this is not one of those stories. To make this particular long story short, I had commissioned Tom through Cadence Comic Art with my usual ask for the artist to depict the Captain America MCU scene of their choice. However, in this instance, there was some miscommunication about the level of detail I was looking for. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize there’d been a misunderstanding until I saw a photo of the completed piece. Needless to say, I was disappointed. But looking back on our correspondence, some of the misunderstanding is on me. I could have, and should have, confirmed a few things, but I tend to take a laissez-faire approach to art direction. So, once I heard I was on the list and Tom was on board for Cap, I didn’t ask questions. Having also commissioned Fabio Moon through Cadence, I reached out to let them know what happened. I wanted to make sure there wouldn't be a repeat of the situation with Fabio. To my great surprise, after a few emails back and forth with Corey Greene, he let me know they had talked with Tom and he was going to redo the commission. I certainly didn’t expect that, and I never would have asked. As painful as it can be, anyone who commissions knows there’s risk involved and you’re not always going to be happy with what you get. But Corey is a collector himself and he wanted to make sure my experience was a positive one. So, my sincerest thanks to Corey for going above and beyond, and to Tom for his willingness to take time out of his schedule to start again. Between the falling figures, the spinning propeller, and the nose piercing through the clouds, Tom does a lot of little things here that add up to a whole lot of energy. As an aside, this is why I usually like to let the artist pick the scene. Once in a while I see a match of artist and scene in my head, but giving them free reign to choose can lead to unique choices like this. I’m quite certain if I’d put a list together of scenes I’d like to check off, this wouldn’t have been on it. Yet I was tickled pink when I saw Tom went in this direction. Social/Sharing |
