DescriptionI don’t remember how I discovered Adam was taking commissions earlier this year, but I wasn’t going to miss an opportunity to work with him on a Cap commission once I did.As a child of the 80s and 90s, I have a soft spot for Adam’s work thanks to his time on X-Force. Between the character-focused stories and his splendid art, it was a book I enjoyed each and every month as a teenager. But what cemented my love for Adam’s art was Angel: Revelations, a miniseries he worked on with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Roberto’s writing on a number of titles, most notably Marvel Knights 4, has always struck a chord with me, and Adam’s work has never looked better than on that book, IMHO. When I reached out to Adam through Instagram, he was extremely kind and easy to work with. As soon as I told him about my theme, he instantly focused in on Cap leading the US infantry into battle. I asked him why he was drawn to that idea and this is what he replied: “As a child, I grew up on color cartoons and WWII movies. The Longest Day, The Great Escape, The Dirty Dozen, and many more. It’s cool to imagine if Cap was actually written into those movies, leading the troops into battle.” Boy did he deliver on that idea! Cap stands out here thanks to Adam’s choice to place him center panel and give him the most dynamic posture of all the soldiers on the page. Yet he doesn’t skimp on the detail for any of the soldiers, or the background for that matter. The result, IMHO, is an extremely immersive scene that demands the viewer spend time to take in all the detail. While this might not be one of the most recognizable scenes to casual MCU fans, fellow Cap enthusiasts will remember it as part of a montage in The First Avenger where Cap and the Howling Commandos are surging against the Red Skull’s forces. I love that this is the image that came to Adam’s mind when he thought of the films. Not only does it flesh out the scenes in my collection, but it’s also my first commission to feature Dum Dum Dugan! Social/Sharing |
