Description

I rediscovered Don Newton’s work only a few years ago and fell profoundly in love with it. I was always aware of him but more like one of the artists in the long succession of Bat-artists. To my defense, he had not been much published in French during my early years (nor was Batman super accessible for that matter).

The more I study his work and especially his work on Batman, the more I find similarities with Michael Golden’s work of that era. Their attention to storytelling, the body language of the characters and their acting (with particular showcase on hands in the case of Newton).

This is my first Batman page by him and certainly not my last.

I’ll be the first to recognize that this is a middle quality one. This is probably due to a very average quality inking, not particularly suited to Newton’s strengths or style (Adkins or Rubinstein being his own favorites).

But what got me were the nice Batman shots in the first and last panels.

I find his stance impeccable in the first. This is a cautious yet not afraid Batman who remains calm even though he is menaced by a gun.

The last panel is fantastic. The dodging Batman I find both very dynamic and realistic with his left arm thrown back.

To make another comparison, if you study Newton’s art, you will see the profound influence he had on Alan Davis (‘s Batman and again in the stance of his characters, body languages and use/placement of their hands). Batman’s position in this last panel is particularly telling of that influence.

More to come ;)
