Description

Here is a nice page from a little Aquaman 10 pages short story featured in the anthological World Finest 262 (which offered TWO Don Newton strips, mind you!).

In this story, Aquaman is trying to rescue a downed ship and its crew trapped in another dimension parallel to our own.

The first panel sees our hero swimming into the swirling vortex that serves as a door between the dimensions. I find that Newton made great use of the circling pattern throughout the page and this begins here.

Then Aquaman attaches the boat to a steel chain. The tilted boat gives us a sense that it is drowned, and the swirling currents tell us we are not in Kans…Atlantis anymore.

The third panel shows great shot at Arthur sending of mental instructions to friends in his dimension. You can tell by his body language that he is tense and yet I find refreshing (pun unintended) that for once a character using mental powers is not touching his temples ;)

Then we have two panels that make great use of diagonals.

The first one really conveys a sense of the whales pulling the chain with all their strength. This may be my fav’ panel within the page if only for the “wow factor”. The art of the whales feels very organic also (which is a quality I would extent to Don Newton’s art in general). A caveat though. As much as I LOVE Newton’s art and storytelling, the insertion of the squared and pointy third panel in this one feels a bit odd, and I feel he could have managed shapes and border better here. It translates into odd shapes and panels interaction.

Then the last panel with the ship being pulled through the dimensional vortex. Great job by Newton at playing with parallel lines and tangents to highlight the immense task at hand.

All this said, I need to comment on Dan Adkins super lush inks. While the majority of fans and collectors seems to go into Alcala territory as regards their favourite inker over Newton, this is my own favourite type of inks over Newton which allow for his organic quality and sense of movement to really shine on top of being lush on its own. I mean look at those super deep and confident blacks here.

I think the 2nd panel is the best drawn and inked one on the entire page, though I do like the whales and the inks on the whirlpool in the last panel!

Love the art on this page!  You know there are orcas attacking yachts in the Atlantic.  They must have gotten a copy of this book!

Very handsome page with the swirling currents that Newton gives Adkins to show off long curves inking.  The only straight lines are the man made ones in the rope and ship.

Beautiful page. Makes most modern artists look like slouches. So much going on in each panel and at the same time, the story telling is crystal clear. Congrats!

I occasionally wonder how much more incredible Newton's art would be had he not passed away at such a young age. What a masterful artist he was.

The PT boat is nicely drawn with its torpedoes. The reader feels the motion of the rising whales and PT boat because of  triangular panels and "flowy" inks. The square panel in one of those panels also seems odd to me as it disrupts the flow towards the surface. That said, the panels are quite effective. Congratulations!

Just love sense the of overall swirling, flowy movement throughout the page - it's like we're along for the ride!  Congrats on some great back to back pages!
