I got this from Dan during Rose City Comic Con 2019. I have long been wowed by Dan's work. In 2019, Dan was doing $60 headshots at the show and I made it my main mission to seek one from him. I gave him an option between a drunk Billy Joel and one of his own creations, and Dan readily chose the Joel. When I picked it up from him he said he and friends were laughing and enjoying this idea while he drew it. Why I chose this for a headshot option, I can only say that the idea of a drunk Joel has long amused me. I meant to specify a 1970s-era Joel to Dan, but this turned out better than I could have expected. I might have to ask Dan to return to this theme at some later date for the 1970s-era Joel so that I can have a sort of permed bookend to the bald Joel. In the meantime, this is one of my favorite pieces and I appreciate Dan's willingness to humor me.
