Description

This is from the classic story in which Nick Fury (Sr.) lost his true love, Pamela Hawley. It was the first time a really established character and love interest had been killed in a Marvel comic. Sure, Junior Juniper died in issue #3 but Junior was clearly designated as a goner before the first issue had even hit the stands. This one hurt. This sequence is from one of the most romantic moments in a 60s hero comic, when Nick realizes the Nazi he'd just punched overboard has Pam's ring in his mitts. Without a thought, Fury leaps over the bow and into the water, where he fights with the Nazi to get it back, not knowing she would die before he could give it to her.
