Description

This wonderful Frederick Opper cartoon illustration was drawn in December 1890, and from the research I've done, I believe it to be the cover of Puck's Library #43, published in February 1891. The title of that issue is "Cold Days: Being Puck's Best Things About Chilly Chunks of Frosty Fate". I've not been able to locate either the magazine or a picture of the magazine, but the information aligns.

While my favorite period of Opper's work is the late, goofy bigfoot stuff, I also dig the work from this transitional period, as he went from a more illustrative approach into cartooning. The cross-hatching on the piece is lovely, as is the use the text and the kids in the background.
