DescriptionDuring the 1950s, 1 of every 4 comics on the newsstand was a romance comic. They sold nearly 200,000 copies of an issue. What comic sells that much these days. Of course, they were a dime then, not $5, but still. Of the publishers doing romance comics, Harvey Comics was one of the more prolific. Some of the stories and art were rather - out there. And then the Comics Code happened. Harvey's answer was not to do more stories but to edit what they had to fit the new rules. Primarily that meant changing word balloons, and often redoing panels to tone them down... lower hemlines, raise the neckline, make breasts smaller. This is the art for the complete 6-page story that was entitled Unwanted. Since very few artists signed their work then, who drew this is a bit of a mystery. One place lists this as by Bill Draut, the GCD lists the artist as Tom Gill as per Jim Vadeboncoeur, Jr. It was also a story that originally appeared in First Love Illustrated #2 (April 1949), and was reprinted with edits showing the results of some Comics Code-mandated such as lettering changes, and white-out (reducing the accents to the women's breasts) in True Love Problems and Advice #38 (1956). This story featured Lois Ames, a young girl trying to get a break as a newspaper photographer. Not only does the editor hate the fact that the publisher hired her without asking, the other photographers think that is no job for a woman (remember this is 1949), and the editor's daughter Gilda is a flirt polluting the editor's opinion. But Lois shows them all, first getting a photo of Gilda kissing another man and then taking the photo that makes the front page. So, she keeps her job and gets a date with the editor to boot. These are twice-up pages with an image area of approximately 12" x 18". You can see some of the CC changes, but otherwise, the art is in great shape. As usual, shipping is not included in the price. I prefer to accept checks or money orders as payment. If you need to use PayPal I will ask you to send it as "Gift" or via Friends and Family. I apologize in advance of that is a problem.
