DescriptionI had backed Terry Moore's "After Dark" art book Kickstarter at the tier that offered a limited number of commissions to backers at that tier. It was difficult coming up with one specific idea and I wound up with requesting a pirate theme and gave him free rein on it. When Terry reached out with some of his ideas to expand on the commission, he showed two ideas he had; one of which incorporated mermaids into the piece. He was inspired by the famous Howard Pyle painting "The Mermaid". With one of the prelims, he offered to incorporate another character of my choosing. He talked about the backstory he had thought of that lead to the scene presented in the art. Sounded like a fun idea and I was amazed at the final results. Here is Terry's story for the art: "The story in my head is that King Charles’ navy ship had the infamous pirate Katchoo captive onboard at last, tied to the mast, and were about to execute her when lightning struck the ship, toppling the main mast which nearly split the ship “atwain”. With the ensuing panic and madness on deck, Katchoo gets free, runs to the captain's cabin and grabs the jewelry box, jumps ship as her foe Master Sargent Frederick Femur fires on her in anger. Katchoo sinks deep into the water and is a goner. But then she is touched by a soft hand. She opens her eyes and there is the most beautiful face she’s ever seen… it’s the mermaid Francine. While Francine holds her hand, Katchoo finds she can breathe underwater. Francine pulls her to a rock offshore South Carolina near Charlestown, where her friend Jet helps pull Katchoo to safety. Katchoo is grateful, and smitten, and she impulsively opens the jewelry box and gives a perfect pearl necklace to Francine. It’s the only time anyone has ever given Francine anything. This only makes Francine love Katchoo more because Francine has secretly been following and watching the pirate for some time. It’s no coincidence she was there when Katchoo needed her." Moore made this commission a classic book illustration as you state. The technique used in creating the water effect, the clouds, rain, and rocks is classic. The cities are done to perfection. Congrats, you got the treasure not Katchoo!

Congratulations. I love the idea of taking Francine and Katchoo, two characterers that Terry has developed real world lives for, and placing in a fantasy scene. The love connection in the look between them is undeniable.

Thanks. I thought a pirate scene might make for a different setting than the characters are usually seen in and still be fun. Terry (naturally) took it to a whole other level. The backstory is great and as you said, the look shared between Francine and Katchoo shows how strong their bond is, no matter if the setting is realistic or in fantasy.

I like the story aspect he put into this commission. That should accompany it in printed or hand written form when displayed.

I saw the process pics Terry posted online, and it's clear he put a lot of thought into the composition for this commission (also evidenced by the elaborate story he wrote up for this piece). Great idea to throw these characters in a different setting, and Terry knocked it out of the (water) park. Congrats!
