Description

Recently acquired from the estimable Monty Bali, here's a series of Walt Kelly pieces done for Life magazine.

In 1952, the NCS selected Kelly as cartoonist of the year. The May 12, 1952 issue of Life commemorated this with an article featuring a very large Kelly cartoon of the swamp and its denizens (that I would give several major organs to possess) and a series of vignettes that ran under the inelegant title "Kelly Looks, Talks Like His Animals." Kelly supplied six and Life ran three.

First, this unpublished portrait of classic Pogo.
